William Louis Carroll, also known as “Woody”, passed away on May 21, 2026, in Aurora, Illinois. Born on January 16, 1942, in Sandwich, Illinois. Woody lived a life defined by passion, curiosity, and dedication.
A devoted sports fanatic, Woody kept a close eye on scores from the professional leagues to local games. His career reflected this passion, having worked as a sportswriter for the Labor Union News and Sun-Times Chicago. He also charmed many as the host of "Stump Woody" on WSPY, where he expertly answered all sports questions, callers brought to him.
Education was a lifelong journey for Woody. Whether at Waubonsee or Northern Illinois University, he loved to learn, even teaching himself to speak fluent Portuguese to stay updated on soccer news from around the world.
Cats were his constant companions, sharing his life with many beloved feline friends. His warmth extended deeply to family as well. Woody is survived by his sister, Maryam Wade (Jerry) of Tucson, Arizona; two nieces, April Reidy and Amanda McMickle; and four great-nieces and nephews—Bailey Antrim, Jakob Reidy, Anthony McMickle, and Holly Reidy. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Louise Carroll.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 29, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL with burial following at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Sandwich, IL honoring a man whose love for sports, learning, and family touched all who knew him.
