Wilhemina Lorene Nelson, 89, of Yorkville, IL, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, surrounded by her family at home. She was born January 6, 1933, at home in Pleasant Plains, IL., the daughter of Lorenz and Bernita (Nordsiek) Winkelman.
She moved to California at age five for eight years and returned to Illinois in 1945. She won the Women’s Basketball competition in the state of Illinois making 12 out of 12 perimeter shots. She graduated from Virginia High School in 1950. After High School, she worked as a secretary in Jacksonville, IL and moved to Yorkville, IL in 1951. Shortly after moving to Yorkville, she began working in Chicago as a secretary. She worked a short time at Lyon Metal in Montgomery, IL until she married in 1953.
She was united in marriage on June 28, 1953, to Norman W. Nelson at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Sandwich, IL.
Lorene was a founding member of New Life Church in Yorkville and was instrumental in its inception. She was also very involved in many community and church ministries, including the Kendall County Freedom Center (“The Chicken Coop”). She dedicated her life to ministering to people with life-controlling issues.
She is survived by her children: Glen (Pam) Nelson of Ottawa, Lowell (Ann) Nelson of South Bend, IN, Janet (Stephen) Dubert of Yorkville, Dale (Karen) Nelson of Yorkville and Linda (Jon) Kellogg of Yorkville, as well as 28 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren (too many to list), and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norman, one brother, Paul Winkelman, one sister, Mary Beauchamp, and her daughters Marie Annette Nelson and Judy Nelson Stewart.
A special thank you is given to Lightways Hospice, Joliet, IL for all their care and support. They were truly an amazing blessing.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 19 from 2-8 p.m. at New Life Church, 3205 Cannonball Trail, Yorkville. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, August 20 at 10:00 a.m. also at New Life Church with Pastor Jeff Sandstrom officiating. Pastor Paul Martin, founding Pastor of New Life Church, will be submitting a video tribute in memory of Lorene. Grandsons Raymond Dubert, Bob Stewart, and Dwight Wyeth will also be assisting.
