Shirley Maxine (Hough) Kaminky, 90, of Lake Holiday, Somonauk, IL passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014. She was born November 11, 1923 in Sandwich, IL the daughter of Forrest and Beactrice (Whittaker) Hough. Shirley grew up in Earlville and graduated from Earlville High School. She enjoyed art and cheerleading at sporting events. Shirley moved to Chicago in 1941 after marrying Sailor Herbert Erwin Kaminky on December 20, 1941 in Missouri. She lived there for 43 years, during that time she pursued her art and was the assistant director of the Vincent Price Fine Art Studio at The Water Tower. When the studio closed, she moved to Sears at the Sears Tower as an office manager of the children’s department until she retired. She found she had a talent for bowling. Shirley joined the Professional Women’s Bowling Association tour, traveling throughout the country with a professional women’s team. She was inducted into the Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Shirley proudly carried over a 200 average for five years and had four 300 games in competition. She started many successful Junior Leagues throughout the Chicago area. In retirement, she moved to Lake Holiday and kept her interests in art and bowling. Shirley enjoyed needle point, painting, playing bridge and participating with the Lake Holiday Ladies Club. She also embraced the St. John’s Lutheran Church family.
She is survived by her son Donald (Cynthia) Kaminky of Somonauk, IL; three grandchildren, Mark (Alison) Kaminky, Heidi (Edward) Giard, and Kristen (Rob) Korte; twelve great grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, David, Thomas, Teddy, Adam, Ashley, Christina, Sean, Ian, Jack and Maggie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband Herb in February 28, 1989.
Friends and family are welcome to join in a celebration of Shirley’s life at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church 325 S. Green St. in Somonauk, IL with Rev. William C. Weidenbach, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Precinct Cemetery rural Earlville, IL. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 in the church until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials in her name may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
