Shirley L. Kalahar, 84, of Moline, IL, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Northshore Specialty Hospital in Covington, LA, with her daughters and son-in-law by her side. She was born October 21, 1928, in Fort Dodge, IA, the daughter of Leonard and Lucille (Stark) Olson. She married Donald M. Kalahar on February 15, 1947.
She was a teacher for 36.5 years in Iowa, and the Moline, IL, school system. After retiring, she became a member of a TGIF teacher's luncheon group and enjoyed their monthly luncheons.
She loved traveling with her husband and her daughters and visited 47 states. She also loved music. She was a piano teacher, and cherished wintering over in New Orleans with her daughter where she listened to live music as often as she could. She passed away while visiting her daughter and son-in-law in the New Orleans area. Shirley volunteered for 13 years at Illini Hospital in Silvis, IL. She was a member of the Silvis and Hampton United Methodist Churches. Shirley enjoyed having coffee every morning with her friends at the East Moline Maid-Rite.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl Kalahar Burley, New Boston, IL, and Paddy Kalahar (Leo) Lossett of Madisonville, LA., two brothers, Dennis (Karen) Olson of Fountain Valley, CA, and Stephen (Debbie) Olson of Spring Hope, N.C.; one sister Debi (Randy) Goslin of LeClaire, IA, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, one brother-in-law, Harold (Oney) Kalahar of Dayton, IA, and one sister-in-law, Doris Kuehnast of Humboldt, IA, twins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Donald Olson and Rex Olson, and brother-in-law Marvin Kuehnast.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2013, at Silvis United Methodist Church, 1301 Second Ave. Silvis, IL, 61282. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the church until the service at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, IL.
