Shannon Lynn (Fugate) Loy

December 8, 1970 — September 5, 2023

Shannon Lynn (Fugate) Loy was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. She left this world suddenly on September 5th, 2023, at the age of 52.

She was born to Joseph and Janis (Larson) Fugate on December 8, 1970. After graduating from Serena High School in 1989, Shannon lived briefly in California but spent most of her life in Leland, where she raised her two daughters, Carson and Monica. In 2021, Shannon made the decision to uproot her life and move to Dallas, Texas, to be closer to her children and the joy of her life, her grandson, Ellis.

Shannon's first priority was always her children and family. Whether it was driving an hour plus to make it to a softball game, coming over in the wee hours of the night to play nurse when someone fell ill, or bringing a warm meal to make sure you were eating, Shannon could always be counted on to show up when it mattered most. She was a devoted daughter, happily taking care of her mother in her mother's final years and calling to check in on her dad, Jerry, almost daily. Even after moving away, Shannon would regularly travel back to Illinois to spend time with her dad and especially loved watching him participate in tractor pulls and karaoke.

Always the one to crack an inappropriate joke or offer you a shoulder to cry on, Shannon was a fierce and loyal friend. She often referred to her friends as her chosen family and made it her mission to make sure everyone felt welcomed. Her daughters vividly remember holidays in their home being filled with not only family, but friends of their mother's who otherwise did not have a place to celebrate. Shannon never met a stranger, a trait she inherited from her own mother. She loved being surrounded by people and after her girls left the house, she even took up part-time bartending jobs to fill her extra time and need for socializing.

She very much looked forward to the summers where she could attend Chicago Cubs games, concerts, and the local tractor and truck pulls. But what brought her the most joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandson. She had already planned on taking him to his first Cubs game and teaching him how to make her favorite Christmas cookies, which is a tradition her family looks forward to carrying on in her memory.

Shannon is survived by her daughters, Carson (Josh) Loy of Garland, TX and Monica Loy of Dallas, TX; her dad, Jerry Burke of Rollo, IL; her sister, Dee (Robert) Hamm of Hopkinsville, KY; her grandson, Ellis, and several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Shannon was preceded in death by her mother, Janis, and father, Joseph.
