Sandra “Sandy” Neilson, 72, of Sandwich, Illinois, went home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion. She was born February 5, 1942 in Green Bay, WI, the daughter of Jeanette (Franche) Kwidzinski and adopted daughter of Bernard and Evelyn (Sweeney) Crain. Sandy married Dennis Neilson on October 5, 1968 in Milwaukee, WI. As a wedding gift, Sandy and Dennis were given a Doberman Pinscher, which they raised and bred for years. Sandy enjoyed spending time outside and in her garden, and she loved animals. She raised horses and veal calves. She loved her Arabian horse Venus, which she brought along to Illinois when they moved in 1984. Sandy worked as a registered nurse at West Allis Memorial Hospital and at several nursing homes including the Sandwich Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. Sandy and Dennis loved to travel in North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Christian education was important to Sandy, and she helped establish a Christian school in Wisconsin that is still open today. She was an active member in a church wherever she lived, most recently at Harvest Chapel in Sandwich. Sandy’s greatest love was her family, especially spending time with her husband, daughters, and grandchildren on the lake and at family gatherings.
Sandy is survived by her husband Dennis of Sandwich, IL; three daughters, Keli (Timothy) Culp of Bella Vista, AR, Kimberly (Jason) Schoepke of St. Charles, IL, and Kristi Neilson of Glennallen, AK; five grandchildren, Brendan, Andrew, Claire, Anna, and Katelyn; one sister-in-law, Judy (Jerry) LeVan of Somonauk, IL; nieces and nephews; and a half-brother, Lawrence Bahr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Harriette Neilson of Sandwich, IL.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Harvest Chapel in Sandwich, IL. Inurnment will be on Monday, December 8, 2014 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Crest Hill, IL. Memorials may be directed to the family.
