Ruth A. Berger, 88, of Somonauk passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich. She was born April 2, 1924 in Naperville, IL the daughter of Frank C. and Barbara (Kerth) Osterland. She married Donald Berger on February 16, 1946 in Naperville, IL. She was a member of The Sandwich Illinois Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ruth loved the farm and her farm life. Ruth grew up on W. Jefferson St. in Naperville and attended Naper School and Naperville High School from which she graduated in 1942. She married her high school sweetheart, Donald Berger, in 1946. She and Don farmed near 83rd St. in Naperville until moving to Somonauk in 1972. They had two children, Richard and Carolyn, who were involved in a car accident in 1964 that took Richard's life and left Carolyn with serious brain damage. Ruth and Don provided Carolyn with the best of care until she died in 1977. Ruth was a strong and courageous woman who never complained and never expressed feeling like a victim. She was a positive role model to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by four nieces, Barbara (Gary) Schneider of Naperville, IL, Nancy (Gordon) Bennett of Brentwood, CA, Susan (Mark) Scheppler of LaGrange, IL, Dr. Janis Gonzales of Santa Fe, NM; one nephew, Robert (Kristin) Osterland of St. Petersburg, FL; one sister-in-law, Stevie Osterland of St. Petersburg, FL; several great nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, son Richard Allen Berger, daughter Carolyn Jean Berger, parents, and three brothers, Robert, Allen and Frank Osterland.

Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL with the Gary Mowry officiating. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Naperville Cemetery in Naperville, IL. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to time of service at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday at the Turner-Eighner Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to The Sandwich Illinois Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
