Dr. Robert C. Shermer Ph.D., 78, of Sandwich, IL, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Provena Mercy Medical Center and is now in His presence. Dr. Shermer was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris, to whom he was married over fifty years, his parents Reverend Robert and Mildred (Prinzing) Shermer and his older brother, Erwin. Also, preceding him were his paternal grandparents, Herman and Emily (Bell) Shermer, and his maternal grandparents Fred (Thomes) Prinzing and Emily (Haunschild) Prinzing. He leaves two children, Dr. Robert C. Shermer III, Valerie A. Stein, her husband Larry Stein, and two grandchildren, Christopher L. Stein, and Stephanie E. Stein, a brother, Richard G. Shermer and his wife Dorothy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Des Plaines, IL, on January 22, 1933, the son of a missionary and minister. Dr. Shermer received degrees from Wheaton College, Northern Baptist Seminary, Southern Illinois University, and Northwestern University. Dr. Shermer served as a minister at two Baptist Churches, taught Sunday School, started the Awana boy’s club at the First Baptist Church of Somonauk, IL, supplied pulpits for over thirty-five years, and taught in colleges and universities for twenty eight years. After his retirement, he served as a substitute teacher for another ten years.

While appearing in Who’s Who in Higher Education and Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, he wrote several books including The Speaking of John Wesley. In addition to several published articles, he taught over twenty college and university courses in Speech, Homiletics and English specializing in small group communication. He was also honored as teacher of the year, debate coach of the year, Governor of the Phi Kappa Delta forensics fraternity, and director of the Southwestern Illinois Public Television project.

His great hope was that he glorified and served God while advancing His Kingdom.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at the Somonauk Baptist Church in Somonauk, IL with Rev. David B. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Sandwich, IL. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, IL.
