Robert George Miller passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Oak Crest Retirement Center in DeKalb, IL. He slipped gently from this life into the presence of the Lord.
He was the only child of Bert and Ida Miller of Somonauk, IL, born on February 18, 1924 at the family farm west of Somonauk. He attended the County Line one-room schoolhouse nearby and graduated from Somonauk High School in 1943. After graduating, he attended Northwestern University for a semester before joining the US Army Air Corp to follow his dream of becoming a pilot. Before deploying overseas to flight in WWII, Phyllis Hallgren took the train out to California to marry her man, Bob.
After the war, he joined Phyllis in Illinois and they returned to live in his former country schoolhouse, which was turned into post-war housing. He went into farming with his father Bert, and on that farm their three children grew up. Son Brian began farming with his father in 1975 and Bob was out at the farm often until his 92nd year. He loved his vocation. He and Phyllis moved to Somonauk in 1997, at which time Brian and his wife, Florence, moved into the farmhouse. Bob maintained an active interest in farming operation until the day that he died. He was not only a farmer, he also engineered and sold grain handling systems in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Bob was born into the church family of Bethany Lutheran Church of Leland. He and Phyllis were active participants in church life, where he participated both on committees and behind the scenes to support and promote his church and his faith. His church family has been a constant and loving part of his life.
His love for flying continued after the war, and he owned several recreational aircraft. He did best as the pilot in an airplane, because he always struggled with motion sickness as a passenger!
Bob is survived by his children, Susan Esther Steve Cromwell and Brian Thomas Florence Miller both of Somonauk, and his son Greg’s widow, Maria Silvia Miller of Maryland. His grandchildren are Emily Cromwell of Chicago, Lucinda Adam Page of Warrenville, and Amanda Miller of Somonauk. He was a beloved uncle to his many and dear Hallgren nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, his wife, Phyllis Evelyn Miller, his son, Gregory Robert Miller, and his half-sister, Irene Hanson.
Service will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Leland. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church Building Fund or the St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, SD, two projects that were close to his heart.
