Robert F. Brummel, 80, of Yorkville, IL passed away, Sunday, January 1, 2012 at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 9, 1931 in Aurora, IL, the son of Leo J. and Gertrude (Modaff) Brummel of Naperville, IL.
Bob farmed in Rochester, Wisconsin after serving the US Army from December 8, 1953 to 1955, stationed in Germany. He then married Patricia Kammes of Big Rock, Illinois on November 29, 1958. In 1962, they moved to a farm south of Yorkville, owned by George M. Dickson. There, together they raised their eight children, the pride of his life.
In 1949, with the help of his brothers Leo and Richard, they built seed cleaners for Brummel Seed Cleaning and built a strong business of which he was Owner/Operator for fifty-six years, supporting three generations of farmers.
He received the State Farmers Degree Award in high school. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Plano, Illinois where he was an usher and a member of the Holy Name Society, which he supplied sweet corn for their annual Steak Fry. He was also a member of Yorkville Moose and Plano’s American Legion.
He served as the director of the Yorkville Farmer’s Elevator, the Kentland Elevator, and Grainco F/S. As member of the Kendall County Farm Bureau, he was President for seven years and served on the Board of Directors for eight years. He was instrumental in starting the Farm Bureau Scholarship Program.
His legacy will live on in the work he did, the people he impacted, the life he made for his family and the values he shared all who knew him. He farmed the land all his life and had always said the best crop he ever raised was his eight children, homegrown with love with the help of his wife of 53 years, Pat. Bob also wanted to say thank you to all of the family and friends that made his life on this Earth great.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Gertrude, sister, Barbara and her husband, Richard, Koretke and brother, Henry and his wife, Margaret Brummel of Kirkland, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; their children, James, Joanne (Roger) Kyrouac, Janelle (Tom) Weber, Gerald, Kenneth (Kay), Carole (John) Steagall, Connie (Gregg) Schoenrade, Colleen (Robert Jr) Browning, and their grandchildren, Randall and Hannah Brummel, Robert and Matthew Kyrouac, Paul (Sonya) and Michael Weber, Aidan Brummel, Richard, Laura, Susan, Rachel and Thomas Brummel, Kendrick and Katherine Steagall, James, Joseph and Jennifer Schoenrade, Robert III and Teage Browning; his brothers and their wives, Leo (Delores), Nick (Loretta), Ed (MaryAnn), Richard (Alice) and sister, Mary, and her husband ( Robert) Kammes.
Wake service will be held at Gerald Brummel’s shed at 10734 Lisbon Road, Yorkville, IL from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 and again on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Plano.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plano, Illinois with Father Andy Davy M.I.C. officiating. Burial will follow at Risen Lord Cemetery in Oswego. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held following the cemetery service at Gerald Brummel’s Shed.
