Richard J. Schlagel, 83, of Somonauk, IL, passed away Friday, September 9, 2011 at his home in Somonauk surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 16, 1927 in Chicago, IL the son of George and Valeria (Schermann) Schlagel. He married Gertrude Betz on September 12, 1953 in Chicago, IL. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II. He worked for Com-Ed for over 35 years. Richard was a member of Holy Name Society at Immaculate Conception in Chicago, volunteer Eucharistic Minister at St. Louis de Montfort in Oak Lawn and St. John the Baptist in Somonauk. He was Assistant Scout Master to Troop #444, Chicago Area Council. Richard was an avid gardener, reader, and folk artist.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude “Trudy”; his children, Michael (Carolyn) Schlagel of Byron, IL, Mary Schlagel of Leland, IL, Ruth (Gerard) Kelly of Indianapolis, IN, Joseph (Anne) Schlagel of Plainfield, IL; eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Amanda and Nathan Schlagel, Kara and Jenna Kelly, Kaitlynn and Preston Schlagel and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Leonora Sherman.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, IL with the Rev. Thomas Brantman officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2011 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to DeKalb Hospice or Circle Rocking S Children’s Farm for Persons with Disabilities in Free Soil, MI.
