Reverend Donald Dominic DeSalvo, age, 80 of Sandwich, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 21, 1937, in Chicago, the son of Dominic Anthony and Virginia Mary (Wawrzyniak-Warwick) DeSalvo. He graduated from Oak Lawn Community High School in 1955, attended Thorton Junior College for two years then trained as a medical laboratory technician. He worked at Thompson Clinical and X-Ray Laboratory in Chicago while a student. After passing the state boards, he worked at South Chicago Community Hospital. In 1960, he was drafted into the army and assigned to Irwin Army Hospital at Ft. Riley, Kansas.
After his tour of duty, he was employed at the Westside Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago. He also worked at Christ Hospital in Oaklawn and Southwestern Laboratories as a part-time employee. In September 1964, he entered Blessed John XXIII Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. He was ordained for the diocese of Rockford, Illinois, May 10, 1969.
His first assignment was at St. Lawrence Parish in Elgin. Other assignments were at St. Monica, Carpentersville; Our Lady of Good Counsel, Aurora; St. Therese, Aurora; Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge; Mercy Hospital in Aurora; St. Mary, Freeport; Holy Family, Rockford and St. John the Baptist in Somonauk. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Rev. DeSalvo is survived by one sister, Lucille Trinkle of LaHabra, California; one brother, David (Lynne) DeSalvo of Yuma, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Marlene DeSalvo of Joliet, Illinois and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister and brother-in-law Dorothy (Joseph) Czapski; one brother, Richard DeSalvo; and one brother-in-law Norman Trinkle.
Funeral Mass will be on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 8S055 Dugan Road, Sugar Grove, Illinois with Bishop David J. Malloy and Reverend Robert Jones officiating. Private burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 4:00 p. m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, March 9, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m.at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
