Phyllis Evelyn Hallgren Miller, age 88, peacefully passed into the arms of her Lord very early on Friday, August 24, 2012.
Born on January 16, 1924, she was the 4th of 7 children of Thure and Esther Hallgren. She graduated from high school in DeKalb and then attended NIU for one year and then Bryant & Stratton Business School in Chicago. During the war, she took the train out west to marry Robert while he was training as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After Robert was sent overseas she moved back and lived with her family. In 1946, after the war, Robert returned home and they moved to their family farm on County Line Road west of Somonauk, where they would remain for 52 years. In 1998, they moved to their new home in Somonauk.
Phyllis was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Leland since 1946 and considered the congregation a real church family. She volunteered on a number of committees and programs through the years. She was also active in Sandwich Art League and the DeKalb County Historical Society. In her middle age, she spent many hours recording memories of the senior citizens of the community and transcribed those recordings for posterity.
Marriage and family were the focus of her life. Her three granddaughters were her “treasures.” She was a devoted aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Phyllis and Bob were life-long partners in their farming operation. Phyllis had many hobbies and crafts. She was a painter, a potter, and a lover of all things historical and geographical. She enjoyed researching and planning the many trips that they took, but she was the most proud of being a clothing designer and seamstress.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert G. Miller. They had three children: Gregory Robert (Silvia) Miller of Maryland, Susan Esther (Steve) Cromwell of Somonauk and Brian Thomas (Florence) Miller of Somonauk. She leaves behind three granddaughters: Emily Cromwell of Chicago, Lucinda (Adam) Page of Warrenville and Amanda Miller of Somonauk. She is survived by three sisters: Dorothy, Carolyn and Linda.
Visitation and memorial services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Leland on Saturday, September 1, 2012. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, with a memorial service at 12:00 noon. Pastor Sherry Hoening will officiate. Private family interment will be at Little Indian Creek Cemetery in Leland at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church Improvement Fund or The Marie Olmstead Museum of Somonauk.
