Patricia Anne Vrahnos, a beloved matriarch, devoted friend, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, Illinois, surrounded by her loving family. Born on November 16, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Patricia was the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Sahm) Hempel.
Throughout her early years, Patricia dedicated herself to her work at a cheese factory, where she learned the value of hard work and diligence. Those who knew her remember her as a warm and nurturing mother and wife, qualities that defined her life and left a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
On June 23, 1956, Patricia married her lifelong partner, John William Vrahnos, in a ceremony filled with love and shared dreams. Together, they built a family grounded in the values of faith and service. As a devoted Catholic at a neighboring church, Patricia’s spiritual life was an integral part of her identity, offering guidance and comfort to those around her.
Patricia took immense pride in her role as a mother to her children: Diana Vrahnos, John E. (Julie) Vrahnos, and Margaret M. (Matthew) Wilhelm. She was a constant source of support and encouragement, always available to lend a helping hand, whether it was through cooking, cleaning, or simply being present. Her infectious smile and caring spirit extended to her seven grandchildren—Jessie Schuth, Jason Vrahnos, Salena Stannard, Cory Wilhelm, Joshua Vrahnos, Zachary Caponi, and Justin Vrahnos—who will forever cherish the sweet memories made with their Grandma Pat.
In addition to her grandchildren, Patricia also delighted in the joys of being a great-grandmother to seven great-great-grandchildren: Jason Jr., Haley Mae, Braxton Ann, Elias Jeffrey, Zoey Marie, Landen Marcus, Amelia Faith, Mason Eugene, and Cooper John; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Each of these little ones held a special place in her heart, and her legacy lives on in their bright spirits and also her grand-dog, Cooper.
In moments of joy, Patricia enjoyed playing cards, mastering the art of Rummy, Canasta Solitaire and In-between.
Patricia is survived by her loving sister, Beverly Joan Cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brothers, Walter, Leo, James, and her gran-dog, Bruno who will surely greet her with open arms in the everlasting embrace of love.
As we gather to remember those precious moments and celebrate the incredible life of Patricia Anne Vrahnos, let us share the stories and laughter, just as she would have wanted—reflecting her spirit of joy, generosity, and unwavering faith in family and the bonds that unite us all. Her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of her family and friends, a testament to a life well-lived and loved. Burial will be private at Queen of Heaven in Hillside, Illinois.
