Opal W. Page, formerly of Holland, Michigan passed away on December 15, 2015 in Morris, Illinois after a short illness. She was 96.
Opal was born June 19, 1919 on the family farm near Danville, Iowa to Fred and Maggie Wagner. Growing up Opal worked with her father in the fields driving the horses and tractor and helped care for the animals. She graduated from Danville High School in 1937 and attended Wheaton College where she received a degree in Math with a minor in physics. She did graduate work at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and other institutions, continuing to take classes and workshops into her eighties.
Opal taught school in Iowa, Illinois and Michigan. After retirement, she continued to teach music in Mexico. She married Rev. Oliver Page on October 16, 1947. They had three children: Donald, Kathryn and Gordon. When the children were growing up, they lived for a school year in Amman, Jordan and later in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was a published author. Opal retired to Holland, Michigan to a home she helped build with Oliver. They also spent time at the family cabin in DeTour Village, Michigan, in Xocenpich, Mexico and in the Middle East. She was very involved in music, teaching, singing and playing hand bells. She remained active in the work of the Presbyterian Church and traveled extensively with her husband, children and grandchildren.
Opal was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Evergreen Commons both of Holland, Michigan and was active in music programs into her 90’s. She remained involved in Palestinian human rights efforts until her passing.
She is survived by her children, Donald Page of Nashville, TN, Kathryn Roland Camp of Munster, IN, Gordon Margaret Page of Somonauk, IL; grandchildren, Caroline Pete Ill, John Camp, Rachel Page, Ian Page; a sister, Ruth Wendell Williams; sister-in-law, Zerlan Wagner; and brother-in-law, Lester Page.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Holland with the Rev. Linda Knieriemen and Rev. Gordon Page presiding. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Holland, Michigan, any of the churches her husband Oliver served, The Bishop’s School in Amman, Jordan, to the Presbyterian Church USA to provide Olive Trees for Palestine or Sabeal International to aid displaced Palestinians.
