Norman Hopkins of Sandwich passed away quietly on Monday, July 28, 2008, at Delnor Hospital. Norman was born on September 29, 1920, in Paw Paw, Illinois to Ruth Town and Neil Hopkins. He married Eleanor Grace Peterson Hopkins on August 17, 1940. Norman proudly served in the Army during World War II in Italy, Belgium, and Germany. After returning home he worked for many years in the plumbing and heating business in Sandwich and in Yorkville for Homer Dickson until partnering with three others in their own business before his retirement. After retirement he enjoyed working part time at Art's Supermarket until he eyesight and health declined.
He is survived by his daughters, Janice (James) Quist of Sugar Grove, IL and Beth Jaeger of Sandwich, IL; his five grandchildren, Kent Quist, Jami (Gary) Bonifas, Trisha (Wayne) Miller, Michael Jaeger, and Tammy Mathis; eleven great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Kenneth Peters; sisters-in-law, Marian Hunter, Polly Peterson, and Adeline Peterson; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Eleanor Hopkins in 2005 and his parents.
Norman was dearly loved by all who knew him as a quiet man with a dry sense of humor who worked hard and always put others needs before his own. He was known by the kind, patient, and trustworthy way he lived all his days. During the 8 years his beloved wife was in a nursing home, he visited her every day, often walking the nearly mile each way in the cold weather to sit and hold her hand and comfort her. His faith in the Lord was his stronghold throughout his days as he gracefully accepted his trails with blindness and other health problems with little complaint. He was a member of Somonauk Baptist Church since moving to Sandwich in the 1950's and attended faithfully before his health failed.
His family and friends will miss him terribly but we know that, finally, he can see clearly.
Visitation was held Thursday, July 31, 2008, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and a memorial service immediately following at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich. Private graveside services will be held at Wyoming Cemetery in Paw Paw, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Fox Valley Older Adults of Sandwich or the building fund of Village Bible Church of Sugar Grove.
