Nolen S. Tucker, 93, of Sandwich passed away Monday, July 20, 2015 at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 7, 1922 in Bethlehem, IN, the son of Jake and Carrie (Vest) Tucker. He married Lucille Hanchett on July 4, 1941 in Missouri and spent 67 wonderful years together. Nolen was a proud US Navy Veteran, he served in the South Pacific during WWII as a gunman on the LCS (L) (3)-48. The LCS ships were called the “Mighty Midgets“ because they were much smaller than the other ships. Their purpose was to clear the shores so that the Marines and Army could be deposited on the beaches. As they were being let off at the beaches the LCS ships fired over their heads at the enemy. He was a farmer until he started working at International Harvester in East Moline around 1957. Nolen retired from International Harvester as a foreman. He and Lucille moved to Wildwood in Sandwich in 2004. They then moved to Ironwood Senior Apartments in Sandwich in 2006.
He is survived by two daughters: Sherry (Charley) Cantrell of Plano, IL and Chris (Jerry) Jennes of Geneseo, IL; two sons: Les (Estelle) Tucker of Sandwich, IL and Ron Tucker of Christiansburg, VA; eleven grandchildren: Mike (Becky) Cantrell of Sandwich, IL, Brad (Pinky) Jennes of Bartlett, IL, Jeff (Stina) Jennes of Bartlett, IL, Joe (Manny Crespo) Cantrell of Florida, Thad (Dana) Tucker of New York, Eric (Misty) Tucker of Shorewood, IL, Bret (Julie) Tucker of Elburn, IL, Jason (Lisa) Tucker of Virginia, Amy (Kristian) Tardif of Virginia, John (Michelle) Leno of Schaumburg, IL and Debbie (Jeff) Samuels of Newark; twenty-three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lucille, one brother, three sisters, several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich with Rev. Kent Svendsen officiating. Burial will follow at Little Rock Township Cemetery in Plano. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Sandwich.
