Newton A. Schlesinger

Newton A. Schlesinger, 89, of Mendota Lutheran Home, formerly of Stonecroft Retirement Village Mendota, and Paw Paw area passed away, Saturday, September 28, 2013 in the Mendota Lutheran Home. He was born July 16, 1924 in Sublette, IL the son of Philip and Hilda (Kaufman) Schlesinger. He graduated from Paw Paw High School. He married Freda J. Haefner on October 20, 1946 in Mendota, IL. Newton farmed in the Paw Paw area until retiring and moved to Mesa, AZ with his wife Freda. After her death in 2000 he moved to Stonecroft Village in Mendota where he was one of the first residents to live there. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Compton, IL, the Mendota Elks Lodge #1212 for over 50 years and was the Inner Guard for several years. He enjoyed the farm life, dancing and the playing of a good game of euchre.

He is survived by one daughter; Kathleen Harrison of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, Steven (Sue) Schlesinger of Lebanon, IN and Samuel (Judy) Schlesinger of Earlville, IL; one brother Clifford (June Adell) Schlesinger of Paw Paw, IL; two daughters-in-law Anabelle Schlesinger of Paw Paw, IL, and JoEllen Schlesinger of Wadsworth, IL one sister-in-law Rita Haefner of West Brooklyn, IL; 10 grandchildren, Becki Jackson, Brandon (Rachel) Schlesinger, Trent (Amy) Schlesinger, Aaron Schlesinger, Adam (Kristi) Schlesinger, Todd Jones, Deanna Jones, Julie (Tony) Derango, Philip (Megan) Schlesinger and Samuel Schlesinger Jr., 10 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Freda, two sons Leslie "Les" Schlesinger and William "Will" Schlesinger, two sisters, Corrine Rosenkrans and Eleanor Mathesius

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Compton, IL with Rev. Judi Huseth officiating. Burial will follow in Restland Cemetery in Mendota, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 4th at the church until the time of services. Arrangements were entrusted to Hanley-Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Earlville, IL.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church rural Compton, IL.
