Mary Curran, 79, of Sandwich, IL passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024 at her home in Sandwich. She was born July 21, 1945 in Sandwich to Francis and Isadora (Hughes) Todd. She attended Sandwich schools where she met her future husband, James Curran, in first grade. Mary graduated from SHS in 1963 and went to College of St. Francis (Joliet, IL) where she majored in Elementary Education, though she later shared she always had a passion for nursing. She graduated from CSF in 1967 and took a job teaching at Sandwich schools. Later that year, on November 18, 1967, she and Jim were married at St. Paul’s church and would spend the next 57 years of their lives together raising a family in Sandwich.
Mary and Jim had three children – Jen, Mike, and Jerry. Growing up in Mary’s household meant doing with what you had (and making the most out of it), giving to others freely, and going on many adventures. From short family trips to Chicago for a play to regular vacations to Disney (and beyond), if you asked our mom, she would tell you – always spend time with those you love! She and Jim spent many days on the road watching children and, later, grandchildren, do the things they loved… from sports, to theater, to speech team and more. There wasn’t a day they didn’t drop everything to make sure their family was supported.
Mary is survived by her husband, Jim, brother, Patrick (Linda) Todd and her children, Jen (Joe Roberts), Mike (Marisa Zapata), and Jerry (Amber). She also leaves behind grandchildren Emma Roberts (Will) Schoonover, Claire and Molly Roberts, and Alexandra, Eric, Xavier, and Annie Curran. Mary was fortunate enough to even get to know great-granddaughter, Dorothy (Dottie) Schoonover, born just 19 months ago. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fran and Dora, and one granddaughter, Paige.
A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, December 21 at Roberts Family Farm, 905 S. Countyline Road, in Sandwich from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers or cards, donate to any charity, do a good deed, or be kind to a stranger. Mary would have wanted it that way.
