Mary Beth Gunier, 66, of rural Somonauk, IL passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 in rural Somonauk. She was born June 18, 1950 in Mendota, IL the daughter of Warner and Rosemary Hughes Hanley. She married Charles Gunier December 14, 1968 in Earlville, IL. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, an avid Somonauk Summer Recreation Program participant and the Somonauk Sport Boosters. Mary Beth graduated from Serena High School in 1968, was a graduate of Illinois State University and received her Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University. She taught Science in the Hinckley Big Rock School District for over 31 years, where she was also the Academic Bowl Coach, retiring in 2010; she continued to be a substitute teacher there. She had a profound love for gardening, crafts, her cats and helping stray animals. The light of her life was spending time with family especially her grandkids.
She is survived by her husband Charles, her mother of rural Earlville, three sons, David Donna Gunier of Sandwich, IL, Matt Dani Gunier of Aurora, IL and Brian Gunier of Oswego, IL; four grandchildren, Kurtis Gunier, Dustin Lindsay Gunier, Reese and Charlie Gunier; one great- granddaughter, Clementine Gunier; two sisters, Jayne Daniel Mason of rural Norway, IL and Julie Karl Tirevold of rural Somonauk, IL; two brothers, Tim Debbie Hanley of Morris, IL and Joe Rita Hanley of rural Earlville, IL, one sister-in-law Linda Hanley of Sheridan, IL, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Warner Hanley and one brother Gregory Hanley.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2017 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, IL with Father Kevin Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Elerding Cemetery Sheridan, IL. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL.
