Lois Elaine (Tuttle) Burkhart (97) daughter of Ben and Elma Tuttle was born September 24, 1927 died peacefully on December 29, 2024. Lois grew up on the family farm in Newark, IL and loved playing outdoors with all her cousins. Lois graduated from Sandwich High School in 1945 and worked as an administrative assistant at Northern Illinois Gas in Aurora, IL., a city she loved to live in with her sister Audrey.
Shortly after high school, Lois married William Jacob Burkhart in 1946 and together they were the proud 4th generation owners and managers of The Burkhart Funeral Home located in Sandwich, Illinois.
Over the years , Lois was very busy raising their 7 children and helping run the family business.
Lois became involved with her beloved community of Sandwich as members of both the Sandwich Ladies American Legion Auxiliary for 75 years as well as a former member of The Rebekahs, also known as the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies (IARA), an international service-oriented organization.
In Lois’s retirement, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, watching the Chicago Cubs, traveling abroad with her cousins, ballroom dancing, swimming, riding her bike, listening to her brother Gerald’s family band play bluegrass music, and sitting on her porch swing in the sun. Lois had an amazing memory, remembering dates and special moments even in her final days. Lois was a member of the Federated Church of Sandwich and was a person of strong faith and believed in the power of prayer. Lois’s greatest joy in life was being with her large family. She enjoyed the laughter and all the chaos.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents Ben & Elma Tuttle, sister Audrey, brother Gerald, her husband William, son Kent and two grandsons Grant & Brandon.
She is survived by her daughter Karla S. Johnson, son Keith J. Burkhart, son Kevin J. (Vicki) Burkhart, daughter Kimberly A. Martin, daughter Kathleen M. (Gary) Astin, daughter Kristi L. Erickson. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
