Lester E. "Les" Grover

Lester E. “Les” Grover, age 92 of Leland, Illinois passed away at his home with great dignity and surrounded by his family, on October 30. 2016. He was born in Leland, the only child off Spencer Charles and Mavis Irene Anderson Grover on March 17, 1924. He graduated from Leland High School in 1941 and worked on the C.B. & Q. railroad before he joined the Army in 1944, serving in Europe in the 52cd Armored Infantry Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and the capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen . He was later the secretary/treasurer for the 52cd Armored Infantry Battalion for 10 years until their flag was retired at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 2007.
Les returned to work on the railroad before he started farming in 1948. He was united in marriage on March 17, 1951 in Rockford, Illinois to Doris J. Hoffman and they have celebrated 65 wedding anniversaries.
Les farmed in the Leland area and served on the Leland High School Board and Leland National Bank Board for many years. He was a member of the American Legion for 70 years and served as LaSalle County’s 12th District commander. He was also a member of Leland Methodist Church and Mendota Elks Lodge for 62 years.
He is survived by his wife Doris and his five children: Pamela LaVoy of Leland, Spencer (Susan) Grover of Carmel, Indiana, Charles Grover of Leland, Linda (Dale) Richard, of Batavia, Illinois, and Donna Glenn Gustafsson of Bel Air, Maryland, and 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Legion Post 570, PO Box 168, Leland, Illinois 60531 for veterans suffering from brain injury or PTSD.
