Leroy Harold Fox, 78, of Sandwich, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer at Edward Hospital in Naperville, IL. He was born August 19, 1932 in Sandwich, IL the son of Leo and Grace (Burns Elliott) Fox. He was together with the love of his life, Sherry Thomas, for 33 years and they were married on January 14, 1980 in Pompano Beach, Florida. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Edgebrook Country Club, Sandwich Moose Lodge #1016 and the American Legion. Leroy was in the Horse Racing industry for 45 years owning, training and driving horses belonging to the United States Trotting Association. Leroy had the uncanny ability to look at a horse and tell you if he was going to be a winner and was a big attribute to the horse industry. He was very proud of being involved with the Sandwich Fair as a Speed Superintendent. He loved his time at local restaurants with his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry of Sandwich; three daughters, LeeAnn (Frank) Williams of Trinity, FL, Regina Meidell of Somonauk, IL, Kari (William) Garber III of Tuscon, AZ; one step-daughter, Tina Thomas Mauer of Sandwich, IL; four grandchildren, Jaysen Meidell, Jenna Meidell, Nathan Garber, Zach Groves; one step-grandson, Cody Mauer; three sisters, Bernice (John) Hutchinson of Lexington, KY, Betty Wilson of Plano, IL, Ruth (Donald) Wallis of Sandwich, IL; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog named Puppy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Gertrude Fox; one son-in-law, Robert Meidell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL with Father Andrew Hougan officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk. Memorials may be directed to the Adopt-a-Race Horse Program or to the charity of one’s choice.
