LaVerne “Vern” Strothman, 93, of Sandwich, IL passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Kishwaukee Hospital in Dekalb, IL. He was born February 1, 1925 in Serena, IL the son of Andrew and Lillian (Benson) Strothman. He married Annabelle Morel on January 16, 1944 in Wayland, MO. He was a member of United Church of Sandwich, formerly a member of the Sandwich Moose. Vern ran a dairy farm in Serena, during winter months worked at the Round House in Aurora, moving locomotives in and out, worked at Western Electric as a supervisor retiring in the early 1980’s. In Vern’s retirement he continued working as a grounds keeper at Cedardell Golf Course in Plano, cleaning Idle Hour Lanes, and delivered balloons for Balloons Aloft up until just a few days before his passing. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, gardening, playing, Euchre and Cribbage. Most of all Vern loved time spent with family and his many friends.
He is survived by three children, Larry (Cathie) Strothman of Sheridan, IL, Judy (Gary) Anderson of Sandwich, IL and Tami (John Taylor) Wig of Sandwich, IL; 7 grandchildren, Pamela Miller, Larry (Dani Bulian) Strothman, Jr., Scott (Maggie) Strothman, Mike Anderson, Kristin (Darrin) Boyer, Amber (Jeremy) Mager and Joe (Steph) Wig; 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years Annabelle.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2018 at United Church of Sandwich 512 E. Lions Rd. Sandwich, IL with Pastor Steven Mindrup officiating. Burial of his urn will follow in Elerding Cemetery Sheridan, IL. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m., Saturday, February 17, 2018 in the church until the service at 11:00 a.m. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Church of Sandwich or to the donor’s choice.
