Karl J. Hartmann

December 31, 1933 — January 7, 2018

Karl J. Hartmann, 84, of Lake Holiday, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Symphony at the Tillers in Oswego. He was born December 31, 1933 in Germany, the son of Wilhelm “Willy” and Katharina Ritzert Hartmann. He married Helga Grauke on December 19, 1960 in Maywood, IL. When Karl was about 20 years old, he left Germany and moved to America. While in Germany, he attended the Conservatory of Music where he became a proficient violinist. Karl and Helga lived in Plano for many years before moving to Lake Holiday about 13 years ago. Karl was very protective of Helga and they did almost everything together. He worked for Caterpillar for many years but other jobs included insurance sales and student driver education. Karl was a big man with a huge laugh and one couldn’t help but laugh with him even if the joke wasn’t that funny.
Karl loved fishing and hunting with his favorite hunting companion, Alex his dog. He also enjoyed frequent chess matches with his neighbor, Frank. He always liked going to dinner with friends; he had a big appetite but he especially liked Helga’s preparation of leg of lamb with potato dumplings. Karl was a great photographer and frequently brought his camera to take pictures of family and friends.
Karl had one daughter, Monika, her husband, Richard, and three grandchildren, Ashley, Chelsea, and Scott. He also had three great grandchildren. Karl bonded with Helga’s relatives from Plano, Sean and Dianna and their children, Jewel, Hannah, and Miles. During the time he spent with the children, he was able to teach them chess and fishing.
