Karen Sue Thatcher, 74 of Sandwich, IL, met Jesus on Thursday, August 28, 2025 in her home surrounded by her loving children. She was born on September 4, 1950, to Sherald and Jane Spears. She was a graduate of Hinckley Big Rock High School, and earned her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University in 1974. With no teaching contracts in hand, she and a friend decided to venture and relocate to Colorado. God had a plan of His own. With less than a week before school started, she was offered a Third-grade teaching position at Hinckley Grade School which was right next door to her home, which she accepted. She met her husband, Treber Duncan Thatcher, Jr., on a blind date in December of that year and they were married 8 months later in 1975. Her teaching career was short-lived as they soon started a family, which was her heart's desire. They were happily married for 47 years.
Karen had a strong unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She loved marveling in God’s beautiful creation that each season brought. Whether it was beholding a sunrise, sunset, clouds, or feeling a heavenly breeze or warmth from the sun. God gave her a love for people of all ages, especially children and she touched many lives in different ways. She was a devoted member of Plano Bible Church (Village) and served in many roles, where she exhibited her servant's heart. Her most treasured role in life was being a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, Grammy, Mimi, Aunt, friend and building close relationships with each of them.
She is survived by her four devoted and loving children and their spouses: Treber Jason (Lisa) Thatcher, Todd (Stephanie) Thatcher, Bethany Thatcher, and Krista (Ryan) Harbeck; grandchildren: Taylor (Adam) and Lucy (great grandchild) Seville, Drew Thatcher, Hogan and Haley Thatcher, Maebyn, Thorsten, and Penley Harbeck; “Mimi” to Zachary Williams; two brothers, Ken (Kathy) Spears, Randy (Barb) Spears; very special sisters, Lynette (John) Finley, Vicki (Kurt) Wurster and loving and devoted cousin, Becky (Howard) Rosenwinkel, among others, and their families whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Sharon Lou Spears, her parents, Jane Phillips and Sherald Spears and her husband, Treber Duncan Thatcher, Jr., all loved and not forgotten.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Friday, September 12, 2025, and the Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 13, 2025, both at Village Bible Church in Plano with Pastor Dwight Lehman officiating. Following the luncheon there will be a graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery in Hinckley and everyone is welcome.
