Joyce Elaine Jacobson nee Fleming died peacefully on August 3, 2016, in Sandwich, Illinois, at the age of 94. Joyce was born on December 27, 1921, in Paw Paw, Illinois, to Elmer and Rosella Fleming. She was raised on a farm in Shabbona, where she learned to play the piano, at age 5, and violin, at age 7, from her grandmother. She received her teaching degree from Northern Illinois University, where she met her husband, Bart. After they were married, Joyce and Bart made their home in Leland.
Joyce had a long and distinguished calling as a school teacher. For 39 years, she taught elementary students in LaMoille, Sheridan, and Leland. The majority of her career was at Leland Elementary School, where she taught for 33 years and touched the lives of countless students and their families. In addition to teaching in public schools, Joyce also gave private piano lessons until the age of 80. Through these lessons, Mrs. Jacobson brought a lifelong love of music to hundreds of children. Joyce was also a member of the Music Teachers’ Consortium at the Sandwich Opera House and of the Leland United Methodist Church, where she often played the piano.
She is survived by her children John Janet Jacobson of DeKalb, Illinois; Janice Coleman of Leland, Illinois; Jacqueline Goldberg of Stevensville, Maryland; and Julianne Donald Kline of Stevensville, Maryland; grandchildren Troy Jacobson, Andrea Brian Niles, Rebecca Tim Bonneau, Brian Kappel, Kyle Meredith Kappel, Tracy Keith Coleman-Steinbach, Vincent Jackie Kline, and Allison Joseph Gavin; and great-grandchildren Justin, Jacob, Julia, Zachary, Emily, Sophia, Ben, Kendall, Shea, Wyatt, Marylee, Isabella, and Jameson.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Rosella Howland Fleming; husband, Bart in 1966; sisters, Doris and Wanda; granddaughter, Meghan Kline; and special friend, Randy Williams.
Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk with Pastor Dave Yim officiating. Burial will follow at Leland Cemetery in Leland, IL. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at noon at the funeral home in Somonauk.
