Joyce E. Cockriel Zitt, 83, of Yorkville, IL passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, IL, surrounded by her family. She was born December 22, 1931 the daughter of Matthew and Isabelle (Baadte) Harker, in Langford, SD, but Joyce lived most of her life in Kendall County, IL. Joyce graduated from Yorkville High School and later married Carl Cockriel on September 30, 1950 in Aurora. Together they raised their family on Lee Street in Plano, which would be home until after Carl passed in 1985. Joyce was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Plano, IL for decades where she and Carl raised their children with commitment to practice of their faith through worship and Catholic education. Joyce was a faithful believer and servant to Jesus, shown quietly in her decades of volunteering as an organist, religious education teacher, and preschool aide. She also took great pride in her 16 years of work as a dental assistant and then as a seamstress.

Joyce later married James C. Zitt on August 23, 2003, a second chance at happiness for them both, after losing spouses. They were married at St. Mary Catholic Church where they were both long-time parishioners. In 2010, they began attending St. Patrick Catholic Church in Yorkville which was much closer to their farm south of Yorkville. When they were newlyweds, Joyce often joked that she and Jim had been married for many years, just not to each other (referencing the number of years they were each married to their dearly departed first spouses).

She is survived by her loving husband, James Zitt, one daughter, Mary (Dan) Bohr; one son, David Cockriel of Plano; four grandchildren, Sarah (Brandon) Walsh of Plano and Leslie (Mike) Faltz of Sandwich, Stacy (Kevin) Jungkans of Millington, Melissa Durakis (John) of Plano. Joyce is also survived by eight cherished great grandchildren, Rocco and William Walsh; Kaleb, Kamden, Kollin, Kassidy, and Konnor Jungkans; and Lily Durakis. Joyce was filled with joy and laughter when her grandchildren, and later her great grandchildren, were around. She loved to spend time with them and tell stories and show pictures of them to others. She is survived by one brother, Anthony David (Mary) Harker of Dayton, OH. In addition, Joyce is survived by her ten step-children Margie Zitt, Jim Zitt, Tony Zitt, Tom Zitt, Ann Kohut, Tim Zitt, Terry Zitt, Jeanne Keller, Rosy Gundersen, and Andy Zitt; their spouses and families.

Joyce was loved and will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and Church community. She was a great example to the family of how to be a wife, mother, and child of God. Joyce was so proud of the family she raised, and the families they in turn raised. There is no better example of kindness, selflessness, and love than her, because of the way she treated others. The word “no” wasn’t in her vocabulary. In times of need, people would turn to Joyce because she was there to do the Lord’s work by helping any way she could. Always on the go, Joyce didn’t know how to slow down, although she was constantly being told to do so. Even in times of tragedy, Joyce remained a pillar of strength because of her faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Carl, and two sons, Thomas and Steve Cockriel and one brother and sister-in-law, Blaine and Jean Harker.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2015 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Yorkville with Rev. Matt Lamoureux officiating.
