Jon passed away peacefully at home on February 17, 2018, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born November 3, 1945 in Aurora, IL the son of Herman W. and Delores E. (Campbell) Thom. Jon graduated from East Aurora High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman, third class at NAHA, Okinawa. After his honorable discharge, he attended Aurora College, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in History.
Jon worked as a truck driver and dispatcher for Consolidated Freightways (CF) in Montgomery, IL. He also worked for Seaboard Seed Co. in Bristol, IL, and was Bristol Township Supervisor. Jon sold life and health insurance for over 40 years. He started his own brokerage (Jon Thom Agency) and worked until he became very ill. Throughout his life, he was very active in Yorkville American Legion Post 489, serving in many positions and the Honor and Color Guard. Jon had many interests and hobbies. First, his love of Buick Cars. He was a lifelong member of the Buick Club of America. He won “Best of Show” with his 1953 Buick Road Master that he restored. He enjoyed golfing, billiards, shuffle board, cooking, especially his German cuisine and of course the German beer. Also, traveling to Florida when he could, tending his flower gardens and black raspberries. Listening to Breakfast with the Beatles 93.1 XRT was a Sunday morning tradition. He was a huge White Sox fan, coached Bristol Little League teams, also played on many Yorkville Legion teams and Cross Lutheran Leagues.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, JoAnn Thom, his son Jonas Thom of Yorkville, IL, his daughter Abby Fitzpatrick of Yorkville, IL, brother Charles F. Thom II of Litchfield Park, AZ, his cousin Mary Fraley of Sugar Grove, IL who was a live-in “sister” prior to Jon’s high school days, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Delores Thom, brother David H. Thom.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Yorkville American Legion Post 489 with Father Bob Conrad officiating, followed by a celebration of Jon’s life.
