John Robert Somers, N.D. D.C. C.H.T. passed away at his home in Sandwich, IL on Sunday, March 25, 2007 after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 28, 1928 to Joseph and Alida Somers in Chicago. He graduated from Chicago Vocational School in 1946, where he studied drafting. He served in the United States marines as am M.P. and was honorably discharged on Jan. 29, 1948. He entered Loyola University School of Medicine as a Pre-Med student and then transferred to National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1953. Dr. Somers retired from his Chiropractic Practice in July 2003 after 50 years of service to patients in Tinley Park, Frankfort, and Sandwich. After his formal retirement he continued seeing special patients at his home in Sandiwch. Dr. Somers was also a Certified Hypnotherapist.
Dr. Somers' "healing hands" were also artistic hands. He sculpted objects 'd art in clay and metal, designed and created pieces of stained glass and wrote award winning poetry. He was a member of the Concord Writers Group.
Dr. Somers was a long time member of the Community of Christ Church and attended the historic Plano Stone Church. He was instrumental in preparing the Stone Church for placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 as the oldest church in continuous use in Kendall County.
Dr. Somers is survived by his wife, Vivian Joy and nine children: Pam (Jeff) Morris of Galesburg, IL, Wendy (Mel) Somers of Denver, CO, Todd (Cyndi) Somers of Aurora, IL, Brian (Julie) Somers of Mt. Greenwood, IL, Erin (Eduardo) Maqueo of Kansas City, MO, Robert (MaryAnn) Ganzer of Tinley Park, IL, Kevin (Susanne) Ganzer of Joliet, IL, Ruth Ganzer of Carol Stream, IL, and David Ganzer of Oak Forest, IL; one brother: Henry (Diane) Somers of Chicago, IL; twenty grandchildren: Dawn (Eric), Scott (Sara), Tiffany, Natalie, Cynden, Keegan, Jenica, Gabrielle, Jackson, John, Jean-Pierre, Monique, Andrew, Joseph, Benjamin, Jon D., Jacob, Robert, Rachel, and Kevin; two great grandchildren: Nikki and Ryan.
Visitation will be at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2007. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Community of Christ Stone Church at Dearborn and Center Street in Plano.
