John F. McConville, 94, of Mendota, IL formerly of rural Earlville, IL passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Allure of Mendota. He was born May 5, 1930 in Ophir Township Earlville, IL the son of Leo and Frances (O’Donnell) McConville on the family farm. He married Florence Munroe on April 25, 1953 at Holy Cross Church in Mendota, IL. He was a lifelong member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Earlville and The LaSalle County Farm Bureau. He farmed his entire life in Ophir Township. John was a Fourth Degree Knight of The Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight, past Faithful Navigator and District Deputy for several terms. He was a past board member of Ophir Township, served on the Ophir School Board for many years, Ophir drainage district and he was a long time Mendota Elks Lodge. He was an election judge for over 30 years. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; his children, “John” Michael (Marlene) McConville of Ottawa, IL, Dennis (Susan) McConville of Peru, IL, Mary (Kevin) Biers of Athens, AL, Ellen (Mark) Atherton of Earlville, IL, Rose McConville (deceased), Dan (Joanna) McConville of Earlville, IL; seven grandchildren will be pallbearers, Angela (Brent) Kalsto, Brian (Christin) Atherton, Jake (Amanda) Atherton, Katie (Laen) Neal, Luke (Bailey) McConville, Jonathan and Daniela McConville; seven great-grandchildren, one sister, Doris Jessen, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Rose McConville; one grandson, Jared Biers; sisters and brothers, Mary (James) Graham, Eileen (Lester) Full, Donnell (Bernice Larkin) McConville, Emmett McConville, Leo (Lois) McConville, John Jessen, Shirley (Richard) Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert “Red” and Shirley Widmer as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Earlville, IL. Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at 10:30 a.m. at the church with Father Gregory E. Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery in Earlville, IL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to MASS which is Mendota Area Senior Services, Mendota Christian Food Pantry or to St. Theresa Catholic Church.
