Joan Patricia Gavin, 94 of Sandwich, IL passed away Wednesday June 4, 2025 at Northwest Hospital in Sandwich. She was born April 5th, 1931, the daughter of Lola and Jackson Sherrill. She married Harold Gavin on December 2,1950 in Marseilles, IL. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandwich. She is survived by her husband of over 74 years Harold Gavin; their 6 children, Sheryl Adkinson, Susan Csiszer, Kathleen Clark (Terry), Teresa Riebe, Steve Gavin (Cassie), and Patricia Lappe; seventeen Grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and one great- great grandchild and one sister, Dixie Nothwang. As a teen, she worked at their family grocery store in Seneca, IL. Later she worked at the Sandwich Hospital for 20 years in the dietary department. Although growing up in the Midwest, she swore she’d never marry a farmer. She often shared that story and added it was the best thing she ever did. She loved helping Harold on the farm with getting the cows or pigs back in when they would get out. She would make a farm lunch for everyone that helped shell corn, bale hay, or harvest the crops. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and taking care of her African Violets and Holiday Cacti. Her most requested chocolate cake was a family favorite at gatherings. Every fall you would find her and Harold around the kitchen table peeling apples for her popular chunky applesauce and other apple favorites. She had the ability to remove any stain from or repair any clothing from lace on a dress to Carhartt overalls. Joan and Harold spent many winters in Arizona at the Road Runner Park in Arizona City, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents Jackson and Lola Sherrill, her brother Jack Sherrill, and son-in-law John Adkinson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025 from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at the funeral home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 14, 2025 with Father Brian Geary officiating at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church located at 340 W. Arnold Rd., Sandwich, IL 60548. A private burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Fox Valley Community Center and/or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
