James R. Wood, 84, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017 in Orlando, FL where he had relocated to be with his daughter and her family. Mr. Wood’s flight to Heaven was swift and straight one after battling cancer.
He was born September 8, 1933 in Augusta, IL, the son of Cline and Viola Bennett Wood. He married Helen M. Keliher on December 10, 1954 in Detroit, MI. Jim was a US Army Veteran serving our great country during the Korean War.
He was a long time member of the Union Congregational Church of Somonauk, loved St. Louis Cardinals baseball, watching horses trotting on his land and at the race track, spending time with family and friends, and contributed in many roles in the community.
Jim retired in 1997 from Somonauk School District JAMES R. WOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL after serving his community since 1959. All, in all, Jim dedicated over 50 years to the Somonauk educational community.
He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Helen; daughter, Patsy Jim Braedyn of Orlando, FL and son, Tim Dawn of Ottawa, IL; five grandchildren, Rachel, Abbey, Stephanie, Casey, and Carly Jo; three great-grandchildren, Brielle, Draydon, and Matthew; brother Charles of Troy, ID; sister Joyce Larson of Milan, IL; multitude of extended family - cousins, nieces, nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by is his son Barney 17 1980, his parents Cline 1979 and Viola Wood 1996, and his brother Carl 1952 Korean War Veteran.
A Celebration of Life to honor Jim will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Somonauk High School Gymnasium with Rev. Theodore Engelsdorfer officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the high school gym.
