Helen M. Swanson, a beloved matriarch and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Plano, Illinois, on February 18, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on August 2, 1929, in Aurora, Illinois, Helen dedicated her life to her family, her faith, and her passions, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Helen was the daughter of Herman and Clara Schnabel, whose values and teachings shaped her into the caring person she became. On February 25, 1950, she married David G. Swanson in Naperville, IL, beginning a partnership rooted in love and mutual respect that lasted until his passing. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Robin (Rick) Johns, Bernadine Rolf, and David G. (Kim) Swanson, who all reside in Plano and Waterman, ensuring that Helen's warmth and wisdom continue to influence future generations.
As a devoted homemaker, Helen was proud of her role in nurturing her family. She created a welcoming home filled with laughter, delicious meals, and unyielding support, embracing the challenges of motherhood with grace and patience. Her dedication to her family did not go unnoticed; she found joy in watching her eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren grow and flourish, a testament to her loving guidance.
In addition to her family commitments, Helen pursued various interests that brought her joy and fulfillment. She was an avid gardener, tending to her plants with the same care she offered her loved ones, and an exceptional baker whose creations delighted friends and family alike. Helen also dedicated her time to St. Mary's Church in Plano, where she volunteered willingly, embodying the spirit of generosity and service.
Helen's life was enriched by the bond she shared with her siblings. She is survived by her brother, Thomas Schnabel of Ottawa, IL; three sisters, Ruth Saam of Yorkville, Jeanne (Mike) Limmer of Minnesota, and Joan Weimer of Sandwich; along with several cherished nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
While Helen enjoyed a long, fulfilled life, her journey was not without loss. She was predeceased by her husband, David D. Swanson, and one son, Gerald David Swanson, as well as her parents, Herman and Clara Schnabel. She also mourned the passing of her three sisters, Mary Montgomery, Louise Richards, and Bernice Isling, and four brothers, Leroy Schnabel, Robert Schnabel, Bill Schnabel, and Frank Schnabel. Their memories will forever remain alive in the stories she shared and the love she imparted onto her family.
Helen’s legacy will be celebrated during a visitation on February 23, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Plano.
