Hazel L. Sherman

Hazel L. Sherman, a beloved resident of Somonauk, Illinois, passed away peacefully at her home on December 21, 2025, at the age of 85, surrounded by the warmth and love of her son, Matt Sherman. Born on July 10, 1940, in Rockton, Illinois, Hazel was the cherished daughter of Harrison and Anna (Parr) Barber.

Hazel’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her faith, and she was a devoted member of St. John's Catholic Church in Somonauk. Her passion for community and connection is exemplified not only through her church involvement but also through her love of gardening and baking, pursuits that brought her joy and the opportunity to share her talents with others.

In her personal life, Hazel's proudest accomplishment was her marriage to Gerald H. Sherman on January 29, 1966, in Plano, Illinois. Together, they created a loving family and many cherished memories, until Gerald’s passing in 2013. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents; siblings Jim Barber, Betty Gale, Florence Keele, and Butch Barber; and her beloved nephew, David Gale.

Hazel is survived by her son, Matt Sherman; her treasured grandchildren, Bailey and Dalton; her three stepdaughters, Linda (Ed) Dawson, Diane (Tom) Karpus, and Janet (Rich) Lamberton; her brother, Fred Barber; along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.

In keeping with her wishes, a private graveside service will be held at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk, Illinois, with Father Joseph Naill officiating. Those who knew Hazel will remember her warmth, kindness, and the joy she brought into the lives of everyone around her.
