Hazel Walker Howey Hawks, 96, of West Peoria, IL formerly of Earlville, IL passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 in Heddington Oaks Nursing Home in West Peoria, IL. She was born August 6, 1918 in Sublette, IL the daughter of Edward Hiram and Theresa Josephine (Wolf) Walker where she grew up on their farm in West Brooklyn, IL. Hazel married Charles J. Howey, now deceased, on January 17, 1940. They lived most of their married life in Earlville, IL except during the war, they moved to San Bernardino, CA. Upon the end of the war they returned to Earlville and started the Howey Sales & Service implement dealership. She was bookkeeper and manager of parts and supplies. During their marriage they were able to travel to many parts of the world and enjoyed family, friends, camping, fishing and snowmobiling.
She married Manley D. Hawks (Deceased) on September 26, 1987. They enjoyed many retirement years with friends and family between Earlville in the summer and Sun City West, AZ. She learned to play golf and enjoyed the Earlville Country Club and rounds in Arizona.
Hazel is survived by one son, Charles E. (Charlotte) Howey of Phoenix, AZ, one daughter, Diana J. (Michael) Swearingen of West Peoria, IL; She loved her five grandchildren, Sheila (Mark) Ludolph of Dunlap, IL, Brian (Kristen) Swearingen of Austin, TX, Anne (Mike Falvey) Howey of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan (Jeremy) Schliepsiek of Peoria, IL, and Erin (Brian) Carlson of St. Charles, IL. She was blessed to have eleven great grandchildren;
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Allen Walker Howey, and one brother, Clyde Jacob Walker.
Hazel was a member of Earlville United Presbyterian Church for many years and upon moving to Peoria, became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. During her lifetime, she belonged to the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, and joined the Creve Coeur Chapter #946 when she moved to Peoria. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Peoria, IL and the Colonial Dames of 17th Century, Peoria, IL. Hazel lived a wonderful life, raising her children she proclaimed was one of the happiest times of her life. She was a great gardener and loved her vegetables and flowers. She won the West Peoria Beautification Award one summer. She was a wonderful seamstress and quilt maker and passed on many quilts to all her family. She enjoyed playing cards and many years of fellowship and friendship at Neighborhood House in Peoria. As her health declined, she spent time at River View Retirement Home in East Peoria, Courtyard Estates of Peoria, and lastly at Heddington Oaks Nursing Home in West Peoria. She was always very creative and strong willed, yet gentle and kind putting others needs before her own. She was great homemaker and mother to her children. She had a great faith in God and the ability to face adversity with grace and confidence.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, March 27, 2015 at Earlville United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Del Keilman officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m., Friday in the church until the time of services at noon. Burial will follow in Precinct Cemetery with dinner and fellowship after at the church.
