Hazel Hilliard

November 21, 1932 — June 20, 2023

Hazel Hilliard, 90, passed peacefully on June 20, 2023. Hazel was born on November 21, 1932 to Harold and Clara Anderson. She attended Sandwich High School, where she met her sweetheart, Charles “Bud” Hilliard. They wed on December 16, 1951 and celebrated 61 years of marriage before his passing in 2013. Hazel and Bud raised two children, Linda and Steve. Hazel nurtured a warm and welcoming home with her boundless capacity for love. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, quilting and needlework. Hazel was proud of her 100% Norwegian heritage, and her lefse and kringla always had an honored spot at the table for holidays and family celebrations. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Somonauk. Hazel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Hazel had a playful, gentle spirit and was rarely without a smile on her face. She showed genuine care and concern for others. She was generous with affection and radiated warmth and comfort. Greetings and departures were always accompanied by heartfelt hugs, and she always waved to departing guests from her window until they were beyond sight, a reminder that her embrace lasted longer than the moment on her doorstep.

Hazel never missed an opportunity to pen an encouraging note to her loved ones. Her cards and letters were often signed with hugs and kisses, a sentiment that transcended distance and spoke of a love steady and sincere. As Hazel journeys onward, her absence will be a loss that leaves an ache difficult to bear, but her memory will always be a blessing for all who had the pleasure and honor of knowing her.
