Gerald A. “Jerry” Stein, 81, of Plano, IL passed away, Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in Oswego, IL. Jerry was born June 13, 1931 in Sandwich, IL, the son of William “Bill” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Mansfield) Stein. He earned his Eagle Scout Badge along with eight other Plano Boy Scouts, which was unprecedented up to that date. He graduated from Plano High School in 1949, and entered the US Air Force in 1951. He was stationed in Japan and Korea as a Statistical Specialist with the Assigned Headquarter Squadron, 5th Air Force during the Korean War. He returned home to serve in the Air Force Reserve at O’Hare Field from 1955 until his Honorable Discharge in 1959.
Jerry joined the Plano American Legion Leon Burson Post 395 in 1955 and was a lifetime member for 57 years. He served as Adjutant for many years; Post Commander in 1978 and later in 1988, Kendall County Commander in 1979 and 12th District Commander in 1983. He worked his way up in the Masons, Ottawa Commandery NO. 10, Knights Templar, and the Chicago/Medina Shriners. Jerry was a member of the Kane-Kendall Voiture 592 of La Societe 40 Hommes at 8 Chevaux (Forty and Eight) and once was Chef de gore (Commander). He was a member of the Yorkville VFW and the Sandwich Chapter of Moose International.
Mr. Stein was among the work force of Federal-Huber Corporation in Plano for many years, and was plant manager at Plant II before the business moved away from Plano. He then went to work for the State of Illinois Dept. of Weights & Measures until he retired. Jerry also served as president of a prominent Plano business, Wilbe Corporation. He was very active with the American Legion, and also enjoyed playing euchre with friends. He loved spending special occasions and holidays with his family. Jerry was well known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Jerry was very loving and loved his family very much.
He is survived by his loving sister, Charlotte Schmidt of Plano, IL and another sister Stephanie Englehart of Sandwich, Nieces and Nephews, Brad (Eva) Gardner of Plano, Kathe (Dan) Clodfelter of Burr Ridge, Shelley (Greg) Johnson of Yorkville, Christine Englehart of Joliet, Dr. Erik (Becky) Englehart of Sandwich; one great niece, Elizabeth Clodfelter and 3 great-nephews, Ryan, Luke and Ben Englehart.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home of Plano, IL, with a gathering of fellowship at the Plano American Legion immediately following the Masonic and Military Rites at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be directed to The American Lung Association, Plano American Legion or the Charity of one’s choice.
