George Dennis Murphy, 68, of Newark passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Hillside Care and Rehabilitation Center in Yorkville, IL. He was born March 6, 1948 in Sandwich, IL, the son of Joseph and Ellie Haas Murphy. He married Mary C. Way on May 1, 1982 in Somonauk. George was a decorated combat veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War for 13 months. He was a Lifetime Member of the Sandwich VFW Post 1486 and the American Legion Post 181, where he served as a Past Commander of both posts. George was a Caterpillar retiree and proud member of the U.A.W. Local 145 for 36 years, Life Member of 101st Airborne Association, Life Member of VietNow of DeKalb County, Ripcord Association and Sandwich Moose Lodge 1016. He was also a former leader of the Newark Neighborhood Watch, Cub Scout Master for 11 years in Somonauk and a Little League Coach for 9 years in Somonauk. George enjoyed golfing and he played softball for years. He owned and raced Harness Horses. George attended Waubonsee Community College and earned his Bachelor of Science from SIU in Carbondale.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Newark, IL; one sister, Mary Jane Turney of Somonauk, IL and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Joy Janet Tuftee and two brothers, Joseph Elliott Murphy and Paul William Murphy.
Memorial Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk with Pastor William C. Weidenbach, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Mound Cemetery in Sandwich, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the funeral home in Somonauk.
