George W. Adkins, 91, of Yorkville, IL, passed away early Thursday, December 22, 2022. He was born March 16, 1931 in Rosamond, IL the son of Byron and Iva (McCain) Adkins. George was united in marriage to the late Harriett “Dee” McCaslin on August 18, 1951 in Pana, IL.
He was raised in a farming family as one of fourteen children. He continued farming after his time in the U.S. Army which included posts in California and Germany. He and Dee farmed part-time north of Sandwich while they raised their children. He spent his workdays at All-Steel and later at Meyer Aggregate where he retired. Most of his life he lived in the Sandwich and Somonauk areas. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, working around his son’s farm, attending the family reunions and family gatherings throughout the years.
He is survived by his daughter Melody (Michael) Labhart of Newark; his son Jeffrey (Wendy) Adkins of Yorkville; grandchildren Amy (Tim) Grewer of Aurora, Kevin (Rhonda) Drury of Montgomery, Renee (Tim) Heckel of Indianapolis, IN, Mendy Blackwell of GA, Krystal (Michael) Kniola of Valparaiso, IN, Brent (Jessica) Labhart of Newark. Carolyn (Daniel) Wyant of Somonauk, Matthew (Kristin) Adkins of Mount Pleasant, WI, including many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Surviving brothers include James Adkins of Pana, John (Pauline) Adkins of Monroe, WI, and Kenneth Adkins of Sandwich. One surviving sister, Betty (James) Smith of Oconee.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, his in-laws, Charles and Eva McCaslin, his wife Harriett “Dee” Adkins, his dear friend Alba Brunettin, one son Michael Adkins, one granddaughter Michelle Drury, brothers Charles, Roy, Howard, Glen Adkins, sisters, Viola Duncan, Lillie Markham, Edith Moomey, Rosa Scoughton and Ruby Moore.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, IL, and a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at McCracken-Dean Funeral Home 308 E. 2nd St, in Pana, IL, with a Funeral Service at noon following the visitation in the funeral home.
