Gary Lee Melau

February 18, 1963 — August 8, 2020

Gary Melau, 57, of Leland, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 8, 2020. He was born February 18, 1963 in Mendota to Donald and Mildred (McLaughlin-Melau-Morel) Melau.
Gary attended Leland Grade School and High School and he was named President of his graduating class of 1982.
He was a self-employed trucker for over 20 years. His friends bequeathed Gary with the nickname “Meat”. He loved to hunt and fish. For over 30 years he and his buddy Mike Rott packed up the rods and reels and headed to Canada for their annual “Guys Fishing Trip”. And seldom did a Wednesday go by that his buddy Jed Clason did not meet up to enjoy Chinese cuisine. Gary also enjoyed demonstrating his engines at the Thresherman’s exhibit at the Sandwich Fair. Gary was a friend to many and will be greatly missed. May we hold our precious memories close to heart until we meet again.
Gary is survived by his mother, Mildred Morel; of Leland; sister-in-law Marlene Melau of Troy Grove; nephew Mitchell (Melissa) Melau of Troy Grove; niece and God-daughter Marissa (David) Trumper of LaSalle; and dearest childhood friend, Candy Bavido of Sterling.
Gary is preceded in death by his father, Donald Melau; his stepfather Vernon Morel; and his brother Montie Melau.
Honoring his generous wish, the gift of hope was shared with many people in need through organ, eye, and tissue donation. Gary gave in death as he gave in life.
