Franz Xaver Scherer, 81, of Yorkville, IL passed away quietly in his home on Friday, January 13, 2017. He was born in Herbertshofen, Germany October 29, 1935. Franz was a machinist by trade and immigrated to the United States by ship in 1955. He arrived in New York then took a train to Chicago where he found work immediately as a machinist. He later moved to Willow Springs and went to work for Electro-Motive Division of GM where he worked for 25 years until his retirement.
In December 1957, Franz married the love of his life Elfriede Doberstein who had also immigrated to the states and they spent the next 59 years together until her death in October 2016. They had three children: Evelyn Falibene of Madison, WI; Edgar Lisa Scherer of Yorkville, IL; Sandra Arthur Weiner of Zion, IL; eight grandchildren: Jason, Joshua and Eliana Falibene; Kyle, Elena and Peter Scherer; Ruthe and Caleb Weiner. Franz was devoted to his wife and family, enjoyed fishing and could always be counted on to fix things or lend a hand whenever needed. Franz was heartbroken upon his wife’s death in October 2016 and while he loved his children and grandchildren, he couldn’t wait to be back by her side.
Franz is survived by his daughter, Evelyn and son, Edgar, his eight grandchildren, his sister and brother in law Ria and Werner Heimbach of Meitingen, Germany; his nieces, Jutta Peter Wippel of Meitingen, Germany; Andrea Lothar Stenzel of Amersee, Germany, and Antigone Peter Wiedemann of Oberwaldbach, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his mother Kreszentia Gaab, his wife, Elfriede, and his daughter Sandra.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Cross Lutheran Church 8609 RT 47 in Yorkville, IL with Pastor Erik Gauss officiating. Burial will follow at Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Yorkville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cross Lutheran School Scholarship Fund.
