Ercil Eugene "Bill" Schroeder

Ercil Eugene “Bill” Schroeder, 74, Sandwich, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012. He was born in Taylor, Missouri, May 20, 1938, son of the late Estill B. and Irene E. (Schoenborn) Schroeder. He attended Joppa High School and graduated from Murphysboro High School in 1956. After graduation he enlisted in the US Air Force, proudly serving his country for twenty years until he retired in 1976. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, recipient of the Bronze Star and Air Force Commendation medal. He joined GTE/Verizon as an Installer working for 28 years before retiring again in 2004. He was working as an Installation Contractor for Woltcom at the time of his death. He was active in a number of organizations including VFW Post 1486, American Legion Post 0489 and Moose Lodge 1016. He was an avid mechanic, sports fan and ruthless pinochle player and will always be remembered for helping family, friends and neighbors with whatever they needed.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maria (Dörr); children: Robert E. of San Antonio, TX, James E. (LaDonna) of Metropolis, Linda L. Anderson of Sandwich, William E. of Sandwich and Michael J. (Kristine) of Mt. Morris; grandchildren: Michele Schroeder of New Bern, NC, Jera (Nathan) Simon of San Antonio, TX Amanda Schroeder of Campbell Hill, Stephanie and Ryan Schroeder of Metropolis, Anthony Schroeder and Elizabeth Anderson of Sandwich, Tyler and Brandon Schroeder of Sandwich, Nicholas, Andrew, Lucas and Ethan Schroeder of Mt. Morris; great grandchildren: Raena and Dane Simon of San Antonio, TX, Kyler Bowerman of Campbell Hill; step grandchildren: Kearsten and Dakota Davis of St. Louis, MO; Justin Baker of San Antonio, TX, Brittanie, Nathan and Allyson Bartling of Mt. Morris; siblings: John B. (Janet) Schroeder of Rockwood, Clara M. Griffey of Joppa, Betty L. (Butch) Clark of Forestburg, TX, Esther L. Schroeder (Ron Saviano) of Franklin Park, Howard J. “Butch” (Mary) Schroeder of Herrin, Martha J. “Janie” (Dick) Raines of Groveland, George E. “Eddie” Schroeder of Vancouver, WA and Helen A. “Susie” (Curt) Malaise of Litchfield Park, AZ; sisters-in-law Theresia Simon and Hildegund (Heinrich) Britz of Germany, brother-in-law Tony (Jacqueline) Dörr of Germany and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Schroeder (Shields), Marianne Valder (Dörr), Maria Dörr (Gauer), Tillie Harmel (Dörr); brothers-in-law: George P. “Junior” Griffey, Albert Simon, Martin Valder and Klaus Dörr; nephew George S. “Steve” Griffey and niece Kathryn G. Schroeder (Pendleton).

A special thank you to the ICU staff of Central DuPage Hospital and his hospice providers at Heritage Manor in Mendota for their loving care and support.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Suydam Road in Sandwich. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the funeral home. Family, friends and anyone he called “Fritz” are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Fox Valley Older Adult Services, 1406 Suydam Road, Sandwich, IL 60548.
