Ellard “Red” L. Smith, 92, of Plano passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich. He was born March 5, 1925 in Princeton, IL, the son of Ellard and Mildred (Sloan) Smith. He married Dorothy Hennes on August 21, 1948 in Moose Lake, MN. Red was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plano. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII. Red was a member of the Plano American Legion Post 395, Sandwich Moose Lodge #1016, and formerly a member of the Knights of Columbus. He retired from AT&T after 38 years of service. Red enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his bike, and mowing grass for others.
He is survived by two sons, Mark W. (Diane) Smith of Abilene, KS and Bruce (Marcia) Smith of Sandwich, IL; four grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Melissa (Mike) Brown, Jason (Norma) Smith, and Nathan Smith; seven great grandchildren, Kassandra, Cameron, Dylan, Ellis, Payton, Skylar, and Aubree; two sisters, June Scherar and Pat Carlsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, and one brother, David Smith.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plano. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Bristol, IL. For more information or to sign the online guest book, go to
