Elfriede Scherer geb. Doberstein, 83, of Yorkville, IL passed away quietly at her home on Sunday, October 9, 2016 after a long illness.
She was born June 21, 1933 in Lengen, Germany, to Edmund and Helene Milbrandt Doberstein. Her happy life with her parents and grandparents was interrupted due to World War II, where as a young girl, she was separated from her parents and siblings as they fled their home. She was displaced and alone for a time, but by the Grace of God she was found by her cousin in a refugee camp. After the war, she was reunited with her parents, sister and brother and they settled in Rickling, Germany.
In 1956, Elfriede immigrated to Chicago and began work at Talman Bank. She was always very good and careful with money and won an award for developing a savings process for the bank. In 1957, Elfriede married Franz Scherer who had also recently emigrated from Germany and together they had three children. Elfriede stayed home for a time to raise their children, but eventually returned to work at Sun Chemical and then Electromotive Division of GM until her retirement.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 59 years, Franz of Yorkville, IL; her daughter, Evelyn Falibiene of Madison, WI; her son, Edgar Lisa Scherer of Yorkville, IL; a son-in-law, Arthur Weiner of Zion, IL; eight grandchildren, Jason, Joshua and Eliana Falibene; Kyle, Elena and Peter Scherer; Ruth and Caleb Weiner; her sister, Irma Treptow of Remscheid, Germany; her sister-in-law, Gisela Doberstein of Elze, Germany; two nephews, Rainer Cornelia Treptow of Tubingen, Germany and Detlef Anna Doberstein of Nienhagen, Germany; as well as her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Werner and Ria Heimbach of Meitingen, Germany; her nieces, Jutta Peter Wippel of Meitingen, Germany, Andrea Lothar Stenzel of Amersee, Germany and Antigone Peter Wiedemann of Oberwaldbach, Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Sandra Weiner and one brother, Adolph, one brother-in-law, Siegfried Treptow.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Cross Lutheran Church at 8609 Rt. 47 in Yorkville, IL with Pastor Matt Conrad officiating. Burial will follow at Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Yorkville, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the time of service at the church in Yorkville.
