Edwin “Ed” P. Pelz, 94, of Lake Holiday, Somonauk, IL (formerly of Elmhurst, IL) passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 16, 1929, in Chicago, IL, the eldest son of the late Edwin and Estelle (Renkal) Pelz.
He graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1948. Through God’s guiding hand, at a Valentine’s Dance in Bucktown, Ed found his lifelong dance partner, Judith C. Hoyne. Married on September 26, 1953, in Chicago, they took many turns around the dance floor throughout their 70 years together.
Ed worked at R.R. Donnelly Company in Chicago, IL, for 42 years. He enjoyed his retirement and was most content in his home at Lake Holiday spending time with his family. He was also a devoted parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk.
Loyal to God and family, Ed’s faith was his constant inspiration and guiding light as he and Judy shared the joys and faced the challenges of raising 10 children. Ed had a quiet demeanor yet an impactful presence. He selflessly spent many years working the third shift, holidays, and overtime hours. His unrivaled work ethic reflected his total devotion to family. In his precious leisure time, Ed most enjoyed camping and family vacations. In his retirement he treasured his world-wide travels. He also had a special gift of capturing the joys of family through the lens of a camera.
Ed was a talented painter. Several of his most cherished pieces reflect the beauty of God’s creation. He also had a passion for bowling, music and chocolate.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, of Somonauk, IL and their children, Edwin (Ellen) Pelz of Bloomingdale, IL, Teresa (Dave) Heuer of Sandwich, IL, Brian (Lori) Pelz of Carol Stream, IL, Dennis Pelz of Lombard, IL, Edith (Nick) Cinfio of Somonauk, IL, Steven (Kathleen) Pelz of Carol Stream, IL, Debra (Scott) Surmin of Hampshire, IL, Laura (James) Soderberg of Cohasset, MA, Pamela (John) Fordon of Huntingdon, TN, formerly of Sandwich, IL, and son-in-law, John Mosher of Sandwich, IL. He was the beloved grandfather of 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was a loving brother to his sister, Donna Coconato, of Estero, FL and brother, Ronald (Cristina) Pelz, of Navarre, FL. He was a dear uncle to several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Estelle Pelz, son, Martin Pelz, daughter, Linda Mosher, and sister, Jeanine White.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk, IL, with a prayer service at 6:45 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Somonauk, presided by Father Bernard Sehr . Burial will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s memory can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
