Edward D. “Duke” Fanning, 81, of Sandwich passed away peacefully Saturday, October 19, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 21, 1932 in Sandwich the son of Edward D. and Frances (Bruehl) Fanning, Sr. He married Janet Wesson on September 3, 1952 in Sandwich. Duke was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for his entire life and a VFW member. He proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Duke was a life long fan of the Chicago Cubs. He worked as a carpenter for several local construction companies before retiring from Waubonsee Community College in 1996. Duke’s greatest love was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 loving years, Janet of Sandwich; his children, Mark (Diane Germaine) Fanning of Glen Ellyn, IL and their children, Ryan (Heather) and Molly, one great grandson, Carey Edward Fanning; Nancy (Charles) Knight of Crystal Lake, IL and their children, Capt. Joseph of the US Army, Thomas and Kathryn (Andrew) Hamilton; Judy (Craig) James of Arvada, CO and their children, Mietra and Sadie; Diane (Brian) Moore of Naperville, IL and their children, Meghan and Jack; Amy (Michael) Weger of Bloomington, IN and their children, Max, Sam and Colin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Sandwich with Father Andrew Hougan officiating. Burial will follow in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich with a prayer service being recited at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, The Open Door Rehabilitation Center or Hospice VNA.
