win Joseph Carey, M.D., 85, of Sandwich, IL passed away on October 9, 2011 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago surrounded by his family. He was born August 6, 1926 in Joliet, IL to Dr. John Francis and Frances Powers Carey. He was brother to John Francis, William, David, and Cheryl. Dr. Carey was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army.
In 1949 he graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Engineering. Upon graduation he joined Johns Manville Steel Company. On September 11, 1954 he married Joan Claire Brady, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Charles Brady of Joliet, IL. Together they had eight children.
He graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1959. He completed his Internship at Cook County Hospital from 1959-61. In 1961 he moved to Sandwich, IL where he established the Fountain Medical Clinic. In 1975 he was appointed the Institutional Physician and Medical Director of the Sheridan Correctional Center in Sheridan, IL until his retirement in 2001.

He was a member of multiple medical societies including: American College of Surgeons, American Medical Society, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Royal Surgical Society, He served as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Chicago’s Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine from 1971-94.

Dr. Carey officially retired his practice on July 1, 2006. In October 2006, he was recognized by then Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Rural Health Association, as Illinois’ Rural Physician of Excellence, honoring his care for rural citizens and health care infrastructure in rural communities. In his nomination, the Valley West Community Hospital administration and staff cited his many contributions over 46 years.

Dr. Carey is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John Francis, David and William, and his first wife Joan Brady Carey. He is survived by his wife Betty Erickson, his children Susan Otterstrom (David) of Peoria, IL; Candy Carey of Benton, AR; John Carey (Lori) of Sandwich, IL; Carolyn Knoebel (Tim) of Oswego, IL; Jane Nasharr (Dan) of St. Charles, IL; Edwin Carey Jr. (Pam) of Sycamore, IL; Andy Carey (Lisa) of Escondido, CA; Scott Carey of Naperville, IL; and 16 grandchildren Joseph Tarpey, Erin Hope (Will), Megan Alvarez (Gerardo), Kristin Carey, Catie, Jonathan and Claire Knoebel, Nicholas and Biz Nasharr, Joseph and Grace Carey, Michael, John, Meredith and Lauren Carey, and great grandson Liam Hope. He is also survived by his stepchildren Krista Tetter, Karsta Erickson (Bill) and granddaughter Kyra Tetter.

Dr. Carey was an avid Cubs fan, golfer, horse racing aficionado and proud sports booster of Northwestern University athletics.

Funeral Mass will be at 12 noon on Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plano with Rt. Rev. Vincent Bataille officiating and Reverend John Waugh and Reverend David Kaul assisting. Interment will be private. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plano with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be sent to Fox Valley Older Adult Services, 1406 Suydam Road, Sandwich, IL 60548 (815) 786-9404 or the charity of one’s choice.
