Donald Laverne “Pinky” Gates, Sr., 73, of Somonauk, IL passed away Monday, March 16, 2009 at Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich. He was born February 22, 1936 in Chicago, IL the son of Harry and Marie (Latham) Gates. He married Patricia Ann Nelson on September 25, 1954 in Somonauk, IL.
He was a cement finisher by trade in his younger years. He was a lifetime member of Sandwich Moose Lodge 1016, where he was the bar and kitchen manger, he also served as Governor, Legion Chairman and many other offices. He received his Pilgrim degree in 2003, which is the highest degree of the Moose. His greatest love was his wife and his family. He also enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Pat of Somonauk; one son, Donald (Eileen) Gates, Jr. of Sandwich; seven grandchildren, Dawn (Don) Lawton, Lisa (Miguel Barrera) Gates, Stephen Gates, Crystal (Justin) Pennington, Nicole Gates, Shawn Roberts, Okema (Joshua) Schultz; nine great grandchildren, Hannah and Emily Williams, Brynn and Landon Pennington, Nathan Barrera, Roland, Wesley, Isaac, Emmann Schultz; one sister, Marcia (Warren) Erdle of New York; two step-brothers, Wallace Zook and Richard (Marie) Zook.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four children, Debra Roberts, Michael, Jon and Kathryn; his in-laws, Axel and Emma Nelson.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk with Fr. Jack T. Heraty officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery in Somonauk. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the funeral home with a Moose Pilgrim Ceremony at 7:30 p.m.
