Charlotte Schmidt was an awesome lady who loved life and never stopped learning! She was born in Plano, IL on September 30, 1928 and passed away at her home in Plano on March 27, 2021 at the age of 92 surrounded by her loving children.

When Charlotte was young, she was chosen to attend Jr. Conservation Camp and then came home and organized a conservation club. After high school, she attended Northern Illinois University. Charlotte married Ralph Gardner and they had a son Bradley. Charlotte and Brad moved to Florida for a time where she was part of the Welcome Wagon in Ft. Lauderdale.

Upon returning to Illinois, Charlotte married Crosby Schmidt and had two daughters, Kathleen and Shelley. She and Cros were happily married for 31 years until Cros passed away. They had several successful businesses together including Schmidt’s Grocery in Big Rock and Coast to Coast Hardware in Plano which they owned for 28 years. They sponsored several successful softball and bowling teams.

In her younger years, Char was an avid golfer. She was always very social and community oriented, and was a member of the Baptist Church and taught Sunday School. She was a past Secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary and member for over 50 years. She was a member of the Plano Commerce Association and was past President. She was a member of the Plano Rotary Club and was the first female Rotary Club president west of Route 47. She was also a Paul Harris Fellow. She served on the Plano Police Pension Board and was a past Chairman. She also served on the Fox Valley YMCA board.

Charlotte served as Owner, Director and CEO of Wilbe Company, Inc., owners of Plano Plaza, for over 30 years.

She loved spending time with her family, gardening, taking family vacations, having swim parties, and traveling around the world.

Char loved playing duplicate bridge and achieved Silver Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. She loved her bridge family!

Charlotte is survived by her three children, Bradley (Eva) Gardner, Kathleen (Daniel) Clodfelter, and Shelley (Gregory) Johnson, one grandchild, Elizabeth (Ricky King Jr.) Clodfelter, and her sister, Stephanie Englehart.

She was preceded in death by her Loving Husband, Crosby Schmidt, who championed her in everything she did, her Father and Mother, William and Elizabeth Stein, and her Brother, Gerald Stein.

Her children are hosting a celebration of her life at Cedardell Golf Course in Plano, IL on May 1, 2021 from 11:00am-2:00pm with a tribute to be held at 1:00pm. The Interment will be private.
